Suqoon was established in 2023 with a Vision to advance healthy ageing in Kenya.
The future of healthy ageing will be built in our communities.
Every community is shaped by the generations that came before it. Older Persons are parents, grandparents, teachers, caregivers, professionals, entrepreneurs, farmers, artisans, volunteers, leaders and custodians of culture. They carry knowledge, experience and perspectives that continue to strengthen families and communities.
Their contributions do not end with age; they evolve.
Yet for many Older Persons, growing older can be accompanied by challenges that affect health, wellbeing, participation and quality of life. These challenges do not affect Older Persons alone. They affect families, communities and the systems around them.
Suqoon was established in 2023 with a Vision to advance healthy ageing in Kenya and create opportunities for Older Persons to live healthy, connected and empowered lives, with the freedom to participate in the things that matter to them.
At the heart of our work is a belief that growing older should not mean becoming invisible, disconnected or excluded from life. Older Persons continue to contribute knowledge, experience, skills, care, leadership and cultural continuity to families and communities.
Everyone is ageing, and preparing for later life should be part of how we think about health and wellbeing throughout the life course.
Older Persons continue to contribute knowledge, experience, skills, care, leadership and cultural continuity to families and communities.
Health matters, but relationships, participation, economic security, environments and opportunity also shape wellbeing.
People experience ageing within their families and communities. Strong relationships and intergenerational connections create a stronger foundation for healthy ageing.
Solutions are stronger when Older Persons can participate in shaping programmes, conversations and decisions that affect their lives.
Older Persons in Kenya in 2025
Kenya's population is changing; people are living longer, and the number of Older Persons is increasing. Kenya has an opportunity to prepare for this change now.
Growing older is a natural part of life. As Kenya's population ages, we have an opportunity to think differently about what growing older can look like. Healthy ageing is more than the absence of illness. It is about being able to continue living well as we grow older, with wellbeing, relationships, participation, independence and a sense of purpose.
For one person, healthy ageing may mean continuing to farm; for another, running a business, caring for family, sharing knowledge, or participating in community life.
We do not prescribe what a meaningful life should look like. We seek to create the conditions that allow Older Persons to continue living one.
Together, these five conditions create a stronger foundation for healthy ageing.
The physical, mental and emotional health needed to live and participate as fully as possible.
Relationships with family, community and others that create belonging and support.
Opportunities to remain involved in social, cultural, economic and community life.
Access to resources, services and environments that enable people to pursue what matters to them.
The ability to make choices, have a voice and influence decisions that affect one's life.
Reduced opportunities for meaningful connection can affect wellbeing, participation and belonging.
Barriers to appropriate, affordable and accessible health and support services can affect quality of life.
Limited financial resources can restrict access to basic needs, healthcare and opportunities for participation.
Negative assumptions about ageing can limit participation and overlook the continued contribution of Older Persons.
Homes, public spaces, services and community systems may not always respond to the realities of an ageing population.
Addressing these challenges requires action across sectors and generations.
A Kenya where every Older Person has the opportunity to live a healthy, connected and meaningful life, with the freedom and support to participate, contribute and pursue what matters to them.
We recognise the rights, experiences and contributions of every Older Person.
We create opportunities for Older Persons to participate meaningfully in family, community and national life.
We believe lasting progress is strengthened through partnerships and collective action.
We embrace learning, creativity and new approaches that can strengthen healthy ageing.
We work with transparency, accountability and professionalism.
We approach our work with empathy and a genuine commitment to improving wellbeing.
We bring together people, knowledge and resources to support stronger communities, more inclusive systems and practical action. As Suqoon has grown, our role has evolved from responding to individual needs to building relationships, convening dialogue and strengthening partnerships.
Working together across sectors and communities.
Listening to and working alongside communities.
Creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and continuous improvement.
Turning shared understanding into practical action.
Healthy ageing affects families, communities, healthcare systems, workplaces, economies and the way society thinks about longer lives. The question is not simply how we support people when they grow old. It is also how we build a society prepared for people to live longer.
We do not only prepare Older Persons for the future.
We prepare society for ageing.
